Do Drinking Dads Contribute to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome?

The Boca Raton rehab center at Treatment Alternatives knows it’s common knowledge that pregnant women should avoid alcohol, but is it time for expectant dads consider putting down the bottle as well?

Pregnant women are told to stay away from alcohol because of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome occurs when a mother consumes alcohol during pregnancy, and it results in physical defects, stunted intellect, and nervous system abnormalities in their baby.

In recent studies on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, scientists have taken a deeper look in to the father’s role in the development of the child. New research states that expectant fathers should also be concerned: a study on male mice exposed to varying concentrations of alcohol before mating showed that the offspring of those who consumed alcohol suffered from abnormal organ and brain development. They were compared to male mice exposed only to saline, who produced normal offspring.

This research is the first of its kind to suggest that a father’s drinking habits pre-conception can cause damaging abnormalities on their child. How is this possible? Scientists are saying a father’s sperm can be negatively affected through consistent alcohol consumption.

Until now, an expectant father’s alcohol intake was never a question during a woman’s pregnancy. However, this myth is being shattered by scientists who are suggesting both mothers and fathers stay away from this toxic substance for the developmental health of their children.
