Prescription Drug Addiction Treatment

Prescription drugs are rapidly becoming an epidemic of abuse in the United States and throughout the world. Prescription drugs that are abused or used for non medical reasons can alter brain activity, which often result in dependence and addiction. There are many commonly held misconceptions about the abuse potential for the powerful substances being prescribed today, because these substances can be obtained legally, and have legitimate uses in the medical profession.

The most commonly abused classes of prescription drugs include opioids (often prescribed to treat pain), central nervous system depressants (often prescribed to treat anxiety and sleep disorders), and stimulants (prescribed to treat narcolepsy, ADHD and obesity).

The most frequently prescribed opioids include oxycodone (OxyContin, Percocet, Percodan, Roxicet), Darvon (Darvocet), Hydrocodone (Vicodin, Lorcet, Lortab), Codeine, Delaudid, Demerol, Fentanyl, Lomotil, Methadone and Morphine. Common CNS depressants include barbiturates such as pentobarbital sodium (Nembutal) and Trazodone. Benzodiazepines like Ativan, Klonopin, Librium, Valium and Xanax are some of the most widely prescribed and misused prescription drugs available today. Stimulants include dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine), methamphetamine (Desoxyn), methylphenidate (Adderall, Ritalin, Vyvance).

For those currently struggling with opioids and/or benzodiazepines we encourage you to visit our opiate addiction treatment and benzodiazepine addiction treatment pages respectively.

There are still other prescription drugs (like muscle relaxers and sedatives), which do not necessarily fit into the categories listed above and yet have the same propensities for misuse and abuse. Some of the most known include Ambien, Soma and Robaxin.

Long term use of prescription drugs will often result in withdrawal symptoms with any stoppage of the medications involved. Opioids and CNS depressants could result in seizures and sometimes even death. Other opiate withdrawal symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness and insomnia.  Withdrawal from CNS depressants can include anxiety, racing mind and thoughts, nausea, tremors and other harmful consequences. Stimulant abuse can lead to paranoia, irritability, dangerously high body temperatures and an irregular heartbeat.
